My course, I would say work hard during your A levels. Try to do a lot, A LOT of medical related work, it is almost an unsaid pre-requisite. Prepare for the interview. For Engin and BM, same thing, work hard, show u are into the subjects by doing interns of something. For everything else, just get slightly above average grades and be rich.
I had to write a few exams. One was psychometric, so no preparation was required. The other I could manage with my IB course work and a bit more UKCAT and BMAT. UKCAT -UK Clinical Admissions Test. BMAT- Bio Medical Admissions Test. I was in contact with my Schools Career Counsellor. The UK application system required considerable input from the schools part. So the role of the Counsellor was more of that, rather than counselling primarily because I knew what I wanted- Medicine! I needed a VISA. But I got it with ease, without an interview, because I was joining as a student of medicine. Tickets were easy to get, though I owe my father for that. I flew by Singapore Airlines and landed at Manchester International Airport, a direct flight. The airport was merely an half hour to 45 minute drive from my university accommodation. I am not entirely certain about the baggage rules, as I faced no issues. My father had travelled with me, and he was coming only for a day, so I could dump all my luggage in his bags. The University had a Meet and Greet, but, I chose not to use it.
There are several scholarships available, but none for students of medicine.
The program was very well structured. Though I wouldnt mind a slightly reduced emphasis on ethics. The regular lectures exceed my expectations. However, one of the guest lectures did leave a substantial room for improvement. Lecture halls are good, and library is like a medical haven, at worst.
I stay at university accommodation - Traditional Dorms. I get a small single room with a private shower and toilette. Quite frankly, I'm more than content with it. Its small, but cosy. Sports facilities are good overall, but since basketball isnt a big sport in the country, there are too few courts for my liking. Part time Jobs depends largely on ones interest and flexibility. But even so, I would be inclined to say it is difficult at best, especially with the time the work load of medicine leaves us with. Social Scene is more than I could have asked for. Sheffield is a student city, owing to the two big universities located here. That means everything in the city is for students to have a good time, and that most definitely includes our night life. Pubs are all over the place, at least one every 5-7minutes. Clubs are all in the city center, but they are plenty in number. There are several societies. For international students, I think there might be one specific one. But there are societies from individual countries (eg. Indian Society), cultures (eg. Punjabi Society), and religions (eg, Sikh Society). Special events will be related to the group they represent, and anyone can join.
It is not easy for international students to get jobs, not in medicine leastways. We dont get any organizations coming to us to hire us. But for other courses, especially Engin, they get loads of companies. Huge ones, like Shell and stuff. Loads of on campus recruitment. Not sure of the work permit process, dont imagine it will be easy will have to be really good. Not sure in other courses, we have a really strong alumni network in medicine.
